Leather seats age two very different ways depending on how they’re treated. Cleaned and conditioned regularly, they stay soft and supple for years. Wiped down with whatever’s on hand and otherwise ignored, they dry out, stiffen, and eventually crack — often faster than most people expect.

Leather Is Still Skin

Automotive leather is a treated animal hide, and like skin, it has natural oils that keep it flexible. Those oils get depleted over time from sun exposure, heat, and simple everyday contact — sitting down, getting in and out, the friction of regular use. Once those oils are gone, leather doesn’t just look worn. It becomes structurally more likely to crack, especially along seat bolsters and high-flex areas like the driver’s seat bottom.

Why Cleaning Alone Isn’t Enough

Cleaning removes surface dirt, body oils, and product buildup — necessary, but it doesn’t replace what the leather itself has lost. Conditioning is the step that actually puts moisture and oils back into the material, keeping it flexible instead of just clean. Skip conditioning long enough and you’re looking at a seat that’s clean but still drying out underneath.

What Accelerates the Damage

Direct sun through a windshield or side windows is the biggest factor — UV exposure and heat both pull moisture out of leather faster than normal use alone would. A car that spends most of its time parked outside, especially with dark leather that absorbs more heat, needs conditioning more often than a garage-kept car with lighter interior color.
